Timeline
The timeline holds the events your book depends on, in the order they happened — including backstory and things that happen off the page.
Add an entry
- Click Timeline in the sidebar, then click New entry. Or choose File ▸ New Timeline Entry… (⇧⌘T).
- Under What to call it, type how you'd refer to the event in a conversation about the book.
- Under When, type the time however you'd say it out loud — "1998", "the summer before", "three days later". Colophon shows it exactly as you type it.
- Under Where it goes, choose which entry it comes after.
- Click Add.
Keep the order
Colophon keeps the order you choose and never sorts entries by what you typed under When. To move an entry, open it and click Move up or Move down.
Fill in an entry
Click an entry in the list to see its page.
- Where it surfaces — the scenes where the event is shown or revealed. An event can happen years before the book starts and still be revealed in chapter nine; link chapter nine. Click Link a scene… to add a scene.
- If it isn't on the page — a note for events that no scene tells, such as something that happened before chapter one. When an entry already has scenes, the scenes carry what happens, and you can still click Add a note anyway.
- Continuity — items about this entry. Click Link an item… to connect one.
- Appears with and Also linked work as they do for characters. See Characters and locations.
To delete an entry, click Delete entry at the bottom of its page. This can't be undone.
