Check for changes
Checking reads your manuscript folder again and compares each chapter with what Colophon remembers. It doesn't record anything, so you can check as often as you like.
Check your manuscript
Do one of the following:
- Click Check for changes on the Manuscript screen.
- Choose Manuscript ▸ Check for Changes (⌘R) from anywhere in the document.
Colophon shows the Manuscript screen and a short message saying what it found.
Read the Manuscript screen
At the top, a banner shows how old your oldest baseline or recorded pass is, and how many files have changed. It turns amber when something needs your attention or that date is more than a week old, and red when it's more than three weeks old or a format change has moved your scenes. When there's something to do, the banner has a button for it.
Under Format, you'll see the format Colophon is using and what it found: files, chapters and scenes. Click Change… to choose another. See Choose how Colophon reads your files.
Under Chapters, each chapter has a row showing:
- its title and file name
- how many scenes and words it has
- whether it has changed since Colophon last remembered it — for a changed chapter, how many scenes and paragraphs
- when that was, and whether it was a baseline or a recorded pass
Click a chapter's row to see its history.

If the check shows changes you want to keep, record them. See Record a revision.
